Amazon’s New Music Info Site
Amazon.com has just launched a new website called SoundUnwound (www.soundunwound.com). The site contains information about music artists and allows users to go in and change the information, much like Wikipedia currently functions. Starting information for bands is largely gathered from other websites.
The way that Amazon will make money will be by selling tracks from the site. So, part of the information about the artists will be recommendations about other artists that were influenced by this artist or sounds like the artist.
One potential downside of the site though is that the information is not transferable. For instance, with Wikipedia, one can gather information from Wikipedia to post on their own site. This is not possible with soundunwound.com.
This is a great idea. Just think of all the stories, photos, and videos that users will be able to add to this library of musical knowledge. Links will readily be available for YouTube videos as well as streaming sound clips. This really has the potential to aggregate the best collection of information about different musical artists.
Stay tuned,
Erik
