Artist Inspiration

As I talk to different musical artists and read biographies of musicians and other artists, I have noticed a theme. The more the artist gets in the way in terms of trying to further their ego, the worse their art becomes. Or to put it in a positive light, the more the artist opens him/herself to letting the music flow by getting out of the way, the better the music will be. It’s almost as if the artist must practice and hone their skill to perfection, but come performance time or time to write a song, the artist must allow themselves to be a third party at the event and let the music flow through them.

An arrogant artist is a type of oxymoron. The true artist knows that at their best, they are merely playing or singing what came to them when they got out of the way and let something bigger flow through them.

Jay-Z says it best in the Fade to Black documentary: “I can’t explain it to y’all man. It comes out of the air for me. They say you put the right artist with the right track in the studio, leave the door cracked, and let God in.”

Stay tuned,
