BMI

BMI, the music performing rights organization, just released some impressive numbers. During the 2008 fiscal year, BMI made $900 million in revenues, dispersing more than $786 to artists. This is a 7.2% increase from the previous fiscal year. Here is how the numbers broke down:

- 26% – international
- 25% – radio
- 21% – cable & satellite
- 13% – broadcast television
- 11% – general licensing
- 2% – new media
- 2% – other

It’s pretty interesting that new media is still only at 2%. This is mostly due to mobile, social networking, and website categories. I would assume this number will continue to increase as more people move to mobile devices as their means of accessing the internet.

It is also noteworthy that this is the first time a copyright organization has topped $200 million for revenues related to music performance.

Stay tuned,
Erik
