Digital vs Physical Album Sales
This stat continues to baffle me – 65% of music sales are still a physical cd format! At least according to the sales numbers for the first half of 2009. Digital download sales account for the other 35%. The prediction is that digital sales will overtake physical sales by 2010 as cd sales fall 15-20% [...]
Apple Income: 8 Billion & Counting
Kudos to Apple and its iTunes store that just hit 8 billion song downloads. That’s 8 billion in 6 years. They are now averaging more than 2 billion song sales per year. Apple takes roughly 30% of each song sale. That’s $2.4 billion in sales. Not bad when the rest of the record industry is [...]
iTunes Pricing
Last month, I blogged about the new pricing structure for iTunes. My prediction was that consumers would move towards cheaper or free alternatives if iTunes raised their prices from $0.99 to $1.29 for the most popular songs. So far, the data appears to confirm my suspicion. Overall revenues for iTunes are down, even though fewer [...]
New iTunes Pricing
iTunes is branching out from it’s $0.99 per song pricing structure. iTunes has now launched a 3-tiered system with price points of $1.29, $0.99, and $0.69. Supposedly, the higher priced items will skew towards the songs with the highest demand. Initial results are that 46% (138 of 300) of the top 300 tracks have pricing [...]

For example, Depeche Mode now has an iTunes Season Pass available. For $19, fans can purchase this subscription to exclusive Depeche Mode content. This [...]
Tap Tap Revenge
The Tap Tap Revenge game application for the iPhone is doing quite well. Tapulous, the company that has brought the Tap Tap Revenge game, has had a total of 6 million free downloads of the application and 100,000 paid downloads ($4.99). This game application has arrows that fall on the screen, and the user must [...]
iTunes DRM-Free
The number one digital music retailer, Apple’s iTunes, just announced that all songs by the major labels will now come DRM-free. DRM is Digital Rights Management. In the past, this meant that if you purchased a song on iTunes, you could only use it on an Apple device, such as the ipod or iphone. Without [...]
The Great Firewall of China
The venerable Chinese government blocked iTunes access this week. Blocked as in all of iTunes. Apparently, some Olympic athletes had downloaded a pro-Tibet album containing songs by Moby, Alanis Morissette, and Sting as a way to protest the Chinese government’s heavy hand towards Tibet. So they just shut down the site for the 1.3 billion [...]
