China Mobile

The current population of the United States is 304,994,114. That should put things into perspective to say that China Mobile, the largest wireless provider in China, has 421,700,000 subscribers. That is 6% of the world’s total population!

Of these 421 million + Chinese mobile subscribers, 80 million + have subscribed to the M. Music Wireless Music Club. This is an upgraded service that allows for music downloads, video downloads, artists photos, ringtones, and magazine downloads directly to the mobile device.

This is impressive on many levels. First of all, most digital purchases in the USA are made on a computer through iTunes. More than 80 million Chinese are downloading songs right to their mobile device which also acts as their iPod.

On another level, this has big implications for web designers and for companies & bands considering their web presence. The future will see more internet sites being viewed on small mobile device screens.

In other news, China Mobile’s talks with Apple to carry the iPhone fell through.
