Indian Music Market
The music industry in India is drastically different than the music industry in the USA. For starters, it is estimated that upwards of 60% of Indian music sales are in film music. Bollywood. Now this 60+% includes new, old, and regional film. Hollywood has a pretty big influence in the USA, but film music doesn’t even really show up on the radar.
As in Japan, India is expected to be a market that readily adapts to purchasing music via mobile devices. Back in 2005, mobile music sales accounted for 5% of the market. That number is expected to jump to 23% by 2010. Also, Apple’s iPhone is set to be released soon into the Indian market. Apple’s itunes platform should also lead to more user ease in purchasing songs online.
As in other developing countries, piracy remains a huge problem in India, estimated to cost the music industry over US$15 million each year.
It is also interesting to note how the download pie is divided in the USA compared to India:
USA Download Percentages:
- Music Label – 56%
- iTunes/amazon – 30%
- Artist – 14%
India Download Percentages:
- Operators – 45%
- Music Companies – 25%
- Government – 15%
- Service Providers – 12%
- Ringtone Creators – 3%
Stay tuned,
