May Album Sales Drastically Down

Physical album sales dropped 17.8% over May ’08. From May ’07 to May ’08, album sales were down 14%. It’s getting worse. Not a big surprise, but these drops continue to be extreme.

For all of 2009, physical album sales are down 13.4% compared to 2008.

So, why keep writing about this? I think the key thing to pull away is that album sale drops are not leveling out. This trend will likely continue. For bands, it is probably smartest to not put a high emphasis on expected income from album sales. In turn, bands will need to consider alternate income streams.
