Mobile Musicians

A company called Thumbplay just released new technology for artists to upload content through mobile devices. Artists can go in and create an account, upload their digital music and graphics, and then make widgets specifically designed for different mobile devices. Another great benefit is that artists get a share of the revenue from song & ringtone downloads and also make money if they play a role in someone subscribing to Thumbplay.

Delivery of content occurs “over-the-air” directly to the mobile devices. Thumbplay also has partnerships with some other major sites such as AOL, iLike, MSN where the band’s page is spread across these sites as well.

This definitely fills a need for musicians. Right now, most music-focused sites are really built for viewing on a large screen with speakers. For instance, the MySpace music player doesn’t even come up on the iPhone. So bands need to have a way to connect to the way their fans will be increasingly discovering and consuming new music.

Stay tuned,
Erik
