MTV Music

MTV is launching it’s own music video website at mtvmusic.com. This comes at a time when Universal Music is considering a similar site. The MTVmusic site will contain a wide variety of music videos and music-related content. It will also allow users the ability to post the videos within blogs, emails, and websites.

This is a good plan for MTVmusic, but I think they will have a hard time drawing people away from YouTube. If I want to watch a music video, chances are it is on YouTube already. If I then want to watch a clip of Coldplay from a live concert, I probably won’t be able to do that on MTVmusic, but could on YouTube. First mover advantage is big here. And so is the offering of a number of different types of videos. I predict that both MTV & Universal will have trouble getting massive amounts of viewers to their sites.
