MuxTape Re-emergence
MuxTape, who shut down under pressure from the RIAA late last year, has re-emerged in a “legal” format. MuxTape hit the industry by storm by offering the ability to create “mixed tapes” online and share them with friends. The site would gather songs located around the internet to supply content for these mixed online playlists. The record labels didn’t like this and pressured the company into shutting down.
Which is a shame, because it led to some serious artist discovery. But since record labels make money on albums, and not successful tours driven by word of mouth and discovery, they killed it.
Well, MuxTape is back. In a nice, safe, legal form. MuxTape now allows artists to upload their own music for people to create mixed online playlists. As of launch, there were only 12 artists, but this is sure to grow.
This is a good idea, and an interesting re-emergence for MuxTape. But how are they going to make money? And how are they going to generate traffic without some of the more popular songs and the limitation of 12 artists at the moment? I’m rooting for them, but we’ll have to see what happens this time around.
Stay tuned,
Erik
