MySpace
I went to a BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) sponsored event in Atlanta a few nights ago. It was organized by a good friend of mine who works at BMI. There were 5 bands that played at this particular showcase. Before each act would start playing, my BMI friend would come up to me and say something along the lines of, “I found these guys on MySpace 2 weeks ago.” “I found this band 2 months ago. First time I’ve seen them live.”
That really just amazed me and put the whole thing into perspective. Here was an event sponsored by a performing rights agency, and they found acts by looking at the bands’ MySpace pages. It just goes to show the shift in power and how bands now have the ability to create their own image and band personality online.
I have written before about a friend of mine who has toured in Japan, South America, and Africa, all as a result of his MySpace page. Promoters in these countries liked his music, contacted him through his MySpace page, and arranged for the tour. A few years ago, that most likely would have taken a good amount of marketing dollars to accomplish.
Stay tuned,
Erik
