No Online Presence
What happens when a company, band, artist, etc. does not maintain an online presence? Well, let’s look at what happened just last week. Most people have seen the musical sensation of Susan Boyle as she sang on “Britain’s Got Talent” and amazed a skeptical crowd.
The performance was all over YouTube and estimates are that the video was viewed over 100 million times over a number of different YouTube channels. And Susan Boyle will not see a penny from those views. And neither will “Britain’s Got Talent.”
Why?
Britan’s Got Talent never made a YouTube channel for their content! It is free to set up a YouTube channel. 9 year olds around the world have set up YouTube channels. But not “Britain’s Got Talent.” Well, they have one now, but it’s a bit late. Because when you have your own channel, you can advertise on that channel. You can also control other YouTube users from posting your video.
So in “Britain’s Got Talent’s” new YouTube channel (created in the last week), there are 1.5 million views of Susan Boyle’s performance. They missed out on potential ad revenue for 99 million views!
What’s the lesson? Don’t be an idiot. If there are free services out there that take less than an hour to set up, then do them. Hire an intern. Set it up yourself on a Saturday. But don’t leave money on the table because of stupidity and being behind the times.
Stay tuned,
Erik

It’s actually worse than that. Simon Cowell, ITV and YouTube could not reach an agreement, so they basically just did nothing. It wasn’t so much that they realized what was going on too late…They just couldn’t get it together when they realized what was happening.
