The Walkman’s Birthday

Sony’s iconic Walkman just turned 30 years old. The Walkman was launched on July 1, 1979, and within 2 months, had sold a whopping 30,000 units. During the next 30 years, Sony sold a total of 50 million Walkmans.
You don’t hear much about the Walkman these days. The iPod has more than replaced the eminence of the Walkman. As of April 2008, the iPod has sold 206 million units. Four times as many Walkmans that were ever sold, and that in just 8 years.
We can all thank Sony for the innovation of the portable music player. But, my how things have changed. The Walkman could play one tape. The iPod can store your entire music library, as well as some movies.
