Twitter Quitter?
A recent report by Nielsen Online stated that Twitter may have some trouble in the near future. The trouble may come in the fact that Twitter only has a one-month retention rate of 30-40%, meaning after users have signed up, only 30-40% are still using the service by the following month.
This contrasts with a 70% retention rate for Facebook. The trouble comes when the 60-70% of Twitter users who don’t return become a greater number than new users.
In my own experience with Twitter, I am following 26 people at the moment. I usually only receive updates from 10 or fewer of those people. I think a lot of people join the bandwagon and then don’t keep up with it. But the 10 people that do use Twitter, use it very often.
In my consulting role for an Atlanta Website Design company, I always advise my clients to use a blog, facebook, twitter, etc., if they are going to be 100% committed. When individuals, bands, or companies use these services and either just create advertisements or don’t update often, there is no reason for anyone to notice the page.
I think the same thing will happen with Twitter. Those who use it correctly will know and utilize the benefits of Twitter, either to stay in touch or creatively promote music, a product, etc. My guess is that Twitter will not have a problem with this low retention rate.
Stay tuned,
Erik
