U.K. Mobile Phone Sales

The following sales number trends are pretty intriguing. Not only are cd sales plummeting, cd players are being replaced by MP3 capable mobile devices at a 5-1 rate. At least that is the rate in the United Kingdom where 32.1 million MP3 devices were sold from Sept ’07 – Sept ’08. A full 75% of these MP3 devices were mobile phones.

Over the last 2 years, 44 million mobile phones with MP3 capabilities were sold. This compares to just 8 million cd players. Russel Coultart, chairman of the group who compiled these numbers, had this to say – “There is now no doubt that MP3 is the fastest-growing music format of all time, faster than vinyl, cassette or CD.”

This isn’t very groundbreaking news, but it points to the extent of the spreading of the MP3 format. A full 90% of phones sold in the United Kingdom can play MP3′s.

Stay tuned,
