We7 & the Labels

We7 (we7.com) just signed a deal with Warner Music to be able to stream Warner’s entire catalog on their site. We7 is a free service that plays ad-supported streaming music. Ads are targeted based upon location, age, & gender. All you do is type in the artist, album, or track you would like to hear and there it is, for free.

The downside is that only Warner & Sony have released their catalogs to We7 so far. But having a second major label on the roster will give We7 a larger audience and a better opportunity to get Universal & EMI on board with their libraries. Another issue is the short little advertisement before some of the songs. Not a bad trade-off though to listen to and discover new music.

This is where I really see things going. Music lovers will begin streaming the music of their choice through their smart phones. It will come to the point where purchasing the music is no longer necessary because internet connection and smart phones will become such that one can stream the song of their choice wherever they are. So why own the song anymore?

Stay tuned,
Erik
